George and Martha, so sad, so mad. He teaches history at a small
New England college, where her father presides as president. After 23
years of marriage, their lives are now filled with intricate mind
games, skewering wit, and countless bottles of gin and whiskey. It is
late on a Saturday night, and Martha has invited a new faculty couple
over for drinks after one of her father’s parties. When the new
couple arrive, they enter a fun house of lies, distortion, and
shocking revelations, games in which they learn about themselves,
about one another, and about the desperate cost of love. Alternately
funny and tragic, the games culminate in an unforgettable catharsis
that is both life affirming and illusion-destroying. Directed by
Aimé
Kelly, Twilight Repertory Theatre’s (TRT) production of Edward
Albee’s revised 2005 Broadway revival of
Who’s Afraid of Virginia
Woolf? is a unique take on this modern classic story of love and
betrayal.
Truth or illusion...light is light, dark is dark? Drunken
laughter lingers and violence sobers. Tenderness mixes with tension
as emotions fueled by alcohol run hot, dancing with affection as well
as wrath. Fun and games until someone gets hurt, or is death the only
chance at new life? Twilight Repertory Theatre’s
Who’s Afraid of
Virginia Woolf? is sure to delight and provoke thoughtful fright in
new and old audiences alike.
