Proof, by David Auburn, won the 2001 Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award for Best Play.

Catherine is about to turn twenty-five and her life is a mess. Her father, once a brilliant mathematician, has just died. Since she spent years taking care of him, she now has no idea what to do with herself. And worse, she is terrified that she may have inherited her father’s madness, perhaps along with his genius. When she meets a young man who wants to go through her father’s papers, her life becomes further complicated. Catherine must not only decide who she is, but also who she might turn out to be and who she wants to be. Proof is a play about the point where the human heart and the human brain intersect, about inheritance and freedom, genius and madness.

Proof was presented to the company by Brittney Hancock, who had wanted to play the part of Catherine for years. With the TRT production, she got her wish, and the result was a production that was a hit with audiences and brought out the best in the company.
